Puerto Rico remained under Spanish rule until 1898, when , as a result of the Spanish-American War, the island was ceded to the United States in 1917. Flores provides an extensive coverage of the Puerto Rican experience in the United States including the feeling of cultural hybridity. Together these two authors have provided an important collection of material needed in the study and understanding of the extensive population and multicultural issues which relate to Latinos and the United States.
